Nature is the basis for agriculture and tourism, the two bases of existence of the population. The geographic map draws the attention to the six villages that make up the valley, each of which was separately established in a location favorable for settlement. Each village has its own agricultural area and its own alpine pastures. One can distinguish three eras in the history of the valley inhabitants: Firstly, the period during the reign of the Interlaken monastery up to the Reformation in 1528, a time characerized by political unrest. Secondly, the quiet centuries until the decline of the old Swiss Confederation in 1798, a period under the reign of the Bernes patriciate. And finally, the modern era of democracy and tourism. The Lötschen bell and the gothic glass painting belong to the first church built in 1488.
