The museum building

The museum building is named "The Mill". Here grain was ground, probably until the middle of the 19th century. The millstone can be seen on the small building forecourt. The owner of the mill was also a baker and grocer. Until the beginning of the 20th century the sole salt tube for all the villages of the valley was in the shop. After the sermon on Sunday the inhabitants of the more remote villages bought their salt in the house near the church. The large room upstairs served Patrician as a court room. There the miller, as governor of the Bernese Bailiwick in Interlaken, conducted negotiations of the Lower Court. Later, the room was used as a public room , meeting room and dance hall. In the past years the Mill was also an economic and temporary political center in the valley.
